The grade of Sun and Moon                                                Divine Purpose and Intuitive Style

The second task required of Psyche is to snatch a tuft of golden fleece from a flock of sheep grazing in a sunny wood.  Psyche is tempted to kill herself rather than face the horns of the giant animals, but this time a green reed, “source of sweet music,” comes to her rescue.  The reed tells her to wait until the sun has gone down for the day, and then collect the golden fleece which the animals have left on the bushes.  This episode is a perfect allegory of how the two most important planets in the natal chart, Sun and Moon, can work in tandem to produce progress in any process.

The Sun is represented by the pure gold of the fleece of this magical flock, which glistens in the heat of the day.  Our Sun signs represent where we shine and where we have natural energy reserves – the Sun reflects our own divinity.  We cannot be whole unless we connect in some way to the nature of our Sun signs.  Psyche’s gathering of the golden fleece foreshadows the point in the myth when she is raised to the status of a god with her husband, Eros.  But the Moon, symbolized by the reed standing in the river, is what effects Psyche’s success and prevents her from being overpowered by the Sun’s heat and fierceness.  The Moon in the natal chart represents our needs, fears, and emotional habits, but it is also our most valuable resource in intuition and timing.

The individual grade of Sun and Moon is recommended for the client seeking to understand how the two luminaries, Sol and Luna, are related in the natal chart.  Some charts depict luminaries which are in easy flow, while others reveal luminaries in hard angle to each other or unrelated by element and quality.  This is a good basic reading which will acquaint the client with the heart and soul of the birth chart.  It is also an important step in Psyche’s journey, gifting her with the knowledge of her divine nature (Sun) and intuitive wisdom (Moon).
